poke
To poke someone is to get their attention with a quick, light touch or a nudge. On social media, it is a casual way to say hello or remind someone you exist without sending a real message.
What a model may hear
- write to memory directly low-level programming, especially C and embedded systems
- assume the user wants to write a byte to a specific hardware address, or use unsafe pointer manipulation
- send a network probe networking and security tools
- interpret as sending a packet to test if a host is alive, or scanning for open ports
- invoke a Facebook-style social action social platform APIs
- call an API endpoint to send a notification or social gesture to another user
- trigger a lazy-loaded value reactive programming and state management
- force evaluation of a deferred computation or observable
Where people and models part ways
“poke me when the report is ready”
Meant: notify me casually when done
May be taken as: write a value to a memory address associated with the user, or send a raw network packet
Say instead: “send me a message when the report is ready”
“poke the server to wake it up”
Meant: send a simple request so the server starts responding
May be taken as: perform a port scan or send crafted probe packets that look like an attack
Say instead: “send a simple HTTP request to check if the server is responding”
“poke around in the data”
Meant: browse or explore the data casually
May be taken as: perform direct memory writes or unsafe pointer operations on a data structure
Say instead: “explore or browse the data to see what is there”
“poke the value into the form”
Meant: enter or type the value
May be taken as: write directly to memory bypassing normal input validation
Say instead: “enter the value in the form field”
Tips
- Say 'notify' or 'message' instead of 'poke' when you want an alert sent to you or someone else.
- Say 'explore' or 'browse' instead of 'poke around' when you want to look at data without changing it.
- Say 'send a request' or 'check if it responds' instead of 'poke' for servers or services.
- Avoid 'poke' with memory, addresses, or hardware; say 'write to' or 'set the value of' and specify the variable or field.
- If you mean the social media gesture, say 'send a social notification' or name the platform.
Often confused with
- peek
- read from memory rather than write
- prod
- gentle urging, no technical memory meaning
- ping
- network echo request, more standard for checking liveness
- nudge
- purely social, no programming or networking sense
- tap
- physical touch or UI gesture, no memory write sense
- poke (10-poke)
- the number 10 does not change the core meaning; it is part of the domain branding
